2025-05-28 Update
The company behind Arc browser has decided to stop further development of the browser. However, security patches will continue to be released. For now, Arc is my main browser, and hopefully it will be for quite some time.
While Apple and Google were focused on dominating the web browser market with Safari and Chrome, a new contender, Arc Browser, quietly emerged. Developed by The Browser Company, Arc is not just another Chromium-based browser; instead, it’s a reimagining of how we interact with the web.
I downloaded Arc some time ago, but only recently started using it. I wish I had switched sooner—it’s a game-changer! Arc offers a fresh and innovative approach that’s hard to ignore. So, if you’re looking for something new, here are 13 compelling reasons why switching to Arc might be the best browsing decision you make this year.
1. A Streamlined and Minimalist Interface
First, say goodbye to cluttered toolbars and endless tabs stretching across your screen. Arc embraces a clean, sidebar-centric design. Your tabs are neatly organized vertically on the left, decluttering the top of your viewport and allowing you to focus on the content. This intuitive layout feels fresh and surprisingly efficient, especially for users who juggle multiple tabs.
2. Spaces: Organize Your Digital Life
Second, Arc introduces the concept of “Spaces,” which are essentially distinct browsing profiles. Imagine having separate workspaces for work, personal browsing, hobbies, or specific projects. Each Space has its own set of tabs, pinned sites, history, and even themes. This feature allows for incredible organization and helps you context-switch seamlessly without getting your digital worlds tangled. For example, you can have a “Work” space with your email, project management tools, and relevant documents, and a separate “Personal” space for social media, news, and entertainment.
3. Easel: Your Built-in Digital Scrapbook
Another key feature is Arc’s “Easel,” your built-in digital scrapbook. Ever find yourself wanting to collect snippets of information, images, and links as you browse? Easel is a game-changer. With a simple drag and drop or a keyboard shortcut, you can save anything from a webpage directly into your Easel. Think of it as a visual pinboard attached to your browser, perfect for research, inspiration gathering, or planning.
4. Boosts: Customize the Web to Your Liking
Furthermore, Arc provides “Boosts,” a unique feature that lets you personalize the appearance and even the functionality of websites. Want to change the font on your favorite news site? Hide distracting elements? Or even inject custom CSS or JavaScript? Boosts empower you to tailor your browsing experience on a per-site basis, putting you in control of how you view the web.
5. Picture-in-Picture Video That Sticks
In addition, Arc’s picture-in-picture (PiP) video functionality is remarkably smooth and persistent. Once you pop out a video, it stays on top of other applications, not just within the browser window. You can resize it, move it around, and continue watching even as you switch between different programs.
6. Arc Max: AI-Powered Browsing
Arc Max enhances your browsing with several AI-driven features:
- Ask on Page: Quickly get AI-generated answers to questions about the content of any webpage.
- 5-Second Previews: Get a brief summary of a link by hovering over it, saving you a click.
- Tidy Tab Titles: Automatically shorten tab titles in the sidebar for a cleaner look.
- Tidy Downloads: Automatically rename downloaded files to keep them organized.
- ChatGPT in the Command Bar: Access ChatGPT directly from the Command Bar.
- Instant Links: Quickly open the top search result from the Command Bar.
- Tidy Tabs: Automatically organize your “Today Tabs” in the sidebar.
7. Profiles: Separate Work & Personal Browsing
Moreover, Profiles allow you to scope logins, cookies, browsing history, archive timing, and other settings to one or multiple Spaces. A common use for Profiles is separating Work data from Personal data.
8. Spaces: Organize Your Browsing Contexts
Furthermore, Spaces allow you to create distinct browsing areas, each with their own set of tabs, pinned sites, and themes. This helps you to separate and organize different aspects of your online life, such as work, personal, or specific projects. Each Space can be bound to a different Profile. Moreover, each new window can load any of the Spaces, thus allowing you to open any number of windows, with different Spaces, bound to different Profiles.
9. Air Traffic Control: Automate Your Link Routing
In addition, Air Traffic Control is a feature that automatically directs URLs to their designated Spaces. For example, you can set Google Sheet links to automatically open in your Work Space.
10. Effortless Tab Management
Beyond the vertical layout, Arc offers intelligent tab management features. You can easily pin important tabs to the top of your sidebar, archive inactive tabs to keep things tidy, and quickly find open tabs with its intuitive search function. The visual representation of tabs in the sidebar also makes it easier to identify and navigate between them.
11. Command Bar: Your Keyboard-Centric Power Tool
For those who love keyboard shortcuts, Arc’s Command Bar (activated with Cmd+T or Ctrl+T) is a powerful asset. It allows you to quickly access almost any browser function, open new tabs, find existing tabs, create Easels, and much more, all without lifting your fingers from the keyboard.
12. Arc Search: AI-Powered Mobile Browsing
Arc Search is a mobile browser that emphasizes AI-driven search and a streamlined browsing experience. It includes features like:
- Tab Switching with a Flick: Swipe left and right on the bottom navigation bar to quickly switch between recent tabs.
- Scrollable Auto-Complete: Scroll through auto-complete suggestions in the search bar.
- Home Screen Widget: Add an Arc Search widget to your home or lock screen for quick access.
- Cross-Device Link Pinning: Pin links from Arc Search to your Spaces for access across devices.
- Walkie-Talkie Voice Search: Use voice search by pressing and holding the + icon.
- Additional Features: Other features include a hidden fidget spinner, quick access to Spaces by holding the tab stack, stylish tab switching, iPad support, icon customization, “calling the internet” by holding the phone to your ear, article summarization, and Action button integration.
13. A Browser That Feels Alive and Evolving
Finally, Arc is not a static product. The Browser Company actively engages with its user base, constantly iterating and adding new features based on feedback. This commitment to improvement means that Arc is a browser that feels dynamic and continues to get better over time. Switching to Arc means joining a community that values innovation and a fresh perspective on web browsing.
In Conclusion: A Browser Revolution
Arc isn’t just a browser; it’s a look at the future of web navigation. It’s a bold, innovative, and user-centric approach that challenges the conventions of traditional browsers. From its streamlined interface and AI-powered features to its unique organization tools and customization options, Arc offers a browsing experience that is both powerful and intuitive.
