بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Bismi Allāhi ar-Raḥmāni ar-Raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Before setting out on any path in life, whether it’s a small task or a major undertaking, we all share a common desire: to begin well and hope for a good outcome.
Quran’s very first verse, “In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate” is exactly that first, right step for everything they do.
For a good Muslim, this phrase is used not just before reading the Quran, but for every little thing they do. Be it eating, drinking, working, traveling – or any little thing.
There are multiple aspects and benefits when you start every task with this supplication.
Remembering God
First and foremost, it puts God first in your mind. It stops you from forgetting who is truly in control and who provides everything.
Asking for Help
By saying “in the name of God,” you’re indirectly asking for His blessing and support in whatever you’re about to do. It’s a humble way of acknowledging that you can’t do everything on your own.
Connecting to God’s Kindness and Mercy
The words “the Kindest, the Most Merciful” remind you of God’s loving nature. It brings a sense of peace and comfort knowing you’re starting with someone who is full of goodness.
Doing everything for His pleasure
When you start every task with calling out Allah’s name, and asking for His divine help, you are also accepting that all that you are doing is for His, and only His pleasure. So, when you do this before everything you do, you are basically living every moment of your life only for Allah’s pleasure.
Accepting His will
This verse also reminds you that whatever you are doing, will only happen if Allah wills it. Therefore, a Muslim surrenders to His will. They give the task their best effort and accept the outcome, whatever it may be, content in the knowledge that it is in accordance with divine wisdom.
A gift from God
Finally, when you start everything by calling upon Allah, you are basically accepting that the moment and the opportunity to do that thing is a gift from God. It is a way of showing your gratitude.
Imagine starting your day by saying “Bismillah.” It’s a reminder that this day, and everything in it, is a gift from God.
Conclusion
All in all, it’s a simple habit, but it changes things. It brings a sense of purpose and connection to the everyday moments of life. It turns ordinary actions into acts of remembrance. When you start a task with “Bismillah,” it’s a way of dedicating that action, no matter how small, to Him.
So, the next time you’re about to do anything, big or small, try saying In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate. It’s a powerful way to start right, with God’s name, His kindness, and His mercy as your guide
